Editorial Advisory Board Adds Six Members

CLINICAL NEUROLOGY NEWS is pleased to welcome 6 new members to our editorial advisory board, which now totals 16. The new members are Dr. Jonathan L. Carter, Dr. Joseph F. Drazkowski, Dr. Elaine C. Jones, Dr. Katherine H. Noe, Dr. Benn E. Smith, and Dr. Richard S. Zimmerman. Here are short bios of the entire board:

Richard J. Caselli, M.D., Medical Editor

Dr. Caselli is professor of neurology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, outgoing chair of the department of neurology at the Mayo Clinic Arizona, a member of the Mayo Clinic Arizona Executive Operating Team, and the clinical core director of the Arizona Alzheimer's Disease Core Center. He has research interests that focus on aging, Alzheimer's disease, and other forms of dementia, particularly the way in which genetic risk factors for dementia may affect how the mind changes with age before the onset of symptomatic memory loss and dementia.

Stuart B. Black, M.D.

Dr. Black is chief of neurology and codirector of the Neuroscience Center at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas. He was a founding member and is past president of the Texas Neurological Society and was chairman of the Texas Medical Association's Section of Neurology. He was on the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School clinical faculty for 37 years and was a clinical professor of neurology. Dr. Black has been very active in the American Headache Society and is currently chairman of its Medical Economics Committee.

Thomas P. Bleck, M.D.

Dr. Bleck is professor of neurology, neurosurgery, pulmonary and critical care medicine, and anesthesiology at Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, where he is the associate chief medical officer for critical care. He also is the assistant dean for admissions at Rush Medical College. Dr. Bleck was the founding president of the Neurocritical Care Society. His research interests include head injury, status epilepticus, infections, stroke, and neuromuscular respiratory failure.

Jonathan L. Carter, M.D.

Dr. Carter is associate professor of neurology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and a consultant in the department of neurology at the Mayo Clinic Arizona. His research interests have focused on clinical research involving new therapeutic modalities for multiple sclerosis, including both investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored phase I, II, and III studies. He also is interested in clinical and MRI variants of multiple sclerosis and in mimics of multiple sclerosis.

Andrew Charles, M.D.

Dr. Charles is professor of neurology, vice chair of neurology, and director of the Headache Research and Treatment Program at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is an attending physician at the UCLA Center for Health Sciences and is an outpatient clinic physician for UCLA Neurological Services. His research interests focus on basic mechanisms of migraine and novel treatments for migraine and other headache disorders.

Joseph F. Drazkowski, M.D.

Dr. Drazkowski is associate professor of neurology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. He is the program director of the Mayo's fellowship in clinical neurophysiology, EEG, and epilepsy. He also directs the EEG laboratory and codirects the epilepsy monitoring unit at the Mayo Clinic Arizona. His research interests have been focused primarily on social issues that confront patients with epilepsy (especially driving and quality of life).

Mark Hallett, M.D.

Dr. Hallett is currently chief of the Medical Neurology Branch and chief of the Human Motor Control Section of the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke in Bethesda, Md. He has been president of the Movement Disorder Society and vice president of the American Academy of Neurology. His research activities focus on the physiology of human voluntary movement and its pathophysiology in disordered voluntary movement and involuntary movement.

Susanna E. Horvath, M.D.

Dr. Horvath is an assistant clinical professor of neurology at Columbia University Medical Center, New York. She is also the chief of neurology at the Allen Hospital, New York. Her subspecialty is stroke, with board certification in vascular neurology. Dr. Horvath also works as a general neurologist. She is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Stroke Association, and sits on the New York City Stroke Council.

Elaine C. Jones, M.D.

Dr. Jones has a private solo practice in Bristol, R.I., and is president of the Medical Staff Executive Committee at Roger Williams Medical Center, Providence, R.I., where she was chief of the division of neurology during 1999-2005. Dr. Jones is cochair of the American Academy of Neurology's Government Relations Committee.

Irene Litvan, M.D.

Dr. Litvan is the Raymond Lee Lebby endowed Professor of Parkinson Disease Research at the University of Louisville, Ky., and chief of the division of movement disorders. She is currently directing studies to identify the cause(s) of and potential treatments for neurodegenerative parkinsonian disorders, as well as to increase the access of medically underserved populations to research and health care.

Katherine H. Noe, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Noe is assistant professor of neurology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and a consultant in the division of epilepsy at the Mayo Clinic Arizona. Her research interests include women's issues in epilepsy, functional imaging, psychogenic seizures, safety and quality in epilepsy care.

Richard Payne, M.D.

Dr. Payne is professor of medicine and divinity at Duke Divinity School, Duke University, Durham, N.C., and the Esther Colliflower Director of the Duke Institute on Care at the End of Life. Prior to Duke, he was chief of the section on pain and symptom management in the department of neurology at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, and then later held the Anne Burnett Tandy Chair in Neurology and led the pain and palliative care service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York. He is a past president of the American Pain Society.

Marwan N. Sabbagh, M.D.

Dr. Sabbagh is the founding director of the Cleo Roberts Center for Clinical Research at the Banner Sun Health Research Institute, Sun City, Ariz., and is the chief medical/scientific officer at the institute. He is also the associate director of the Arizona Alzheimer's Disease Core Center and a clinical instructor in the Banner/St. Joseph's Hospital's Geriatric Fellowship Program. He is a staff physician at Boswell Memorial Hospital where he specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

William D. Shields, M.D.

Dr. Shields is the Rubin Brown Chair in Pediatrics, professor of pediatrics and neurology, and chief of the division of pediatric neurology at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is the director of programs in pediatric epilepsy, clinical trials in pediatric neurology, and the ketogenic diet at UCLA.

Benn E. Smith, M.D.

Dr. Smith is associate professor of neurology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. At the Mayo Clinic Arizona, he is director of the sensory laboratory as well as the course director for clinical neurophysiology. His research interests have focused on peripheral neuropathies and the treatment and diagnosis of small fiber neuropathy and other neuromuscular disorders.

Dr. Richard S. Zimmerman, M.D.

Dr. Zimmerman is associate professor of neurosurgery at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and associate dean of the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education. His neurosurgical practice at the Mayo Clinic Arizona focuses on the surgical treatment of epilepsy, cerebrovascular disease, and trigeminal neuralgia. He has served as Medical Director of Mayo Clinic Hospital for 10 years. He chaired the Mayo Clinic Quality Care Subcommittee, which integrates and coordinates quality and safety initiatives for the Mayo Foundation at all Mayo Clinic sites.
