Neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus is a diagnostic challenge, requiring both neurologic and rheumatologic assessments. The American College of Rheumatology has described case definitions and diagnostic criteria for 19 central/peripheral nervous system syndromes observed in SLE. Their diagnosis relies on a combination of clinical, laboratory, neuropsychological, and imaging assessments. To find out how imaging is being used to diagnose and better understand this complex disorder, see Image of the Month, p. 13.
