Asian Patients Should Undergo Gene Testing Prior to Carbamazepine Use

Patients of Asian ancestry are at significantly increased risk for fatal skin reactions when treated with the anticonvulsant carbamazepine and should undergo genetic testing to assess their risk before initiating therapy, according to a Food and Drug Administration alert.
